As am typing it is the first day of November and am not sure if the sun has come up at all today. This what I imagine it was like in medieval times, except this one day of gloom was pretty much standard for the whole era.
But I am not a serf and having to produce pig iron or whatever (my historical knowledge isn’t exactly accurate, or indeed knowledge) for a cruel lord. No, instead I prance about in daft get ups playing records and / or trying to be entertaining. They would have drowned me as a witch in ancient times. And some may still want to now.
Here is where I am at this month:
2ND NOVEMBER – IPA EFFECTIVENESS AWARDS CEREMONY – HILTON BANKSIDE
Doing me Big Bumper Pop Quiz on Sunday 24th April at the splendid Shoreditch House. It starts after you’ve finished digesting your roast dinner at 6pm in the Library.
Here is an enticing description of what’s in store:
A trashular spectacular quiz from the poundshop queen of pop, DJ Anna Greenwood. Testing your brains with showbiz trivia from tv, music and celeb gossip, it’s a quiz for those fluent in emoji, know their CBB from their MIC and always have an eye on the Sidebar of Shame.
Featuring: Name that Tune (on the recorder), Instaham (where Instagram meets Ham) and THE MADNESS OF KANYE rounds. Prizes, medals and GLORY for winners, mega LOLZ for all!
Maximum six members per team. No cheating or googling or we’ll throw your phone in the pool
No doubt you are ALL clamouring to come after reading that. If you’re a member then it’s free. That’s good isn’t it? You need to be a member to go there anyway. But if you ask me nicely I could perhaps bagsy a table for ya’ll. Drop me a line – email@example.com
Well would you look at that. We’re in what the music industry calls Q4, where all the big hitting albums are released, X Factor and Strictly is on telly for YEARS and it’s well dark out. And raining. However, as I type it’s still sunny so maybe this will be the glorious Autumn everyone imagines. All that big coats and boots and crisp morning fantasy chat, when in reality it’s windy, raining like heck and pavements are a constant invitation to do your ankle in with an abundance of soggy leaves.
Yeah, REAL TALK. Deal with it.
Here’s what I’ll be doing amongst the pavement slides and sighing at the amount of layers to wear of a morning:
THURSDAY 1ST OCTOBER – FOX AUTUMN SHOWCASE – CENTRAL ST MARTINS
It’s private babes., yeah? For the telly folk. I am going to be dressed a bit like a pop star who is in one of their shows. I can’t say who yet, but I am excited already.
A James Bond extravaganza at the beautiful Bloomsbury Ballroom. Each event will take its lead from a Bond film with performers, dinner, drinks and ME in an appropriate frock getting a disco going! First one is From Russia With Love. Am going to have my hair DEAD straight and look well serious. Have a look at the video here and all booking info and so on is here
SATURDAY 3RD OCTOBER – H&M OXFORD CIRCUS / KANDY POP – BOUNCE
Double disco day – first stop H&M Oxford Circus for shop popping 12-4pm, then disco balls meet ping pong balls at Bounce for Kandypop my new residency from 9pm – 1.30am. In between am having a nap. I love a nap.
Lovely Sunday deluxe relaxation – amazing food and drinks, slippers so you can put your feet all over the sofas, loadsa sweets and a tv room to watch endless Ab Fab repeats in. Not bad for £25. Oh and I play records! Not too loud though, I know you may have sensitive ears of a Sunday. Info! Booking! HERE
My trash culture quiz for the snazzy members bar propping up Bethnal Green Road. Testing some of London’s coolest brains on facts about low brow fims, one hit wonders and sizes of instagram stars arses. CLASSY. 7pm start
Taking the quiz up West! The cleanest pavements and hair lie in Notting Hill. Last time I was there someone asked me if Bingo Halls still existed. An insight to another world. I LOVE IT. Quizzing starts at 7pm for them there members.
You know the drill now – website has the info Film this time is The Spy Who Loved Me, which incidentally is my favourite Bond theme. It’s the Carly Simon Factor. Such lovely teeth. Let’s have a picture of them to break up these endless words
YES! Back FINALLY at The Old Queen’s Head after taking RK round the country. Come get on a ragga tip, re-re wind and let me be your fantasy as we go raving karaoke style. An arsenal of glow sticks and whistles will keep us dancing and singing and having a right good time. 8 – 11pm. TICKETS HERE OI OI
Am referencing The Bangles with this post, what with it being September and me being a girl. Bit obscure praps, but it’s my site so I can do what I fancy. SUCH FREEDOM. That’s the Bangles up there in case it isn’t obvious yet. Click on the pic and you can hear the track.
What I didn’t know was that the song is spelt September GURLS, even though I had the tape as a yoof. Also it sounds a bit like Moonlight Shadow doesn’t it?
ANYWAY, summer’s done one – well in honesty, it did one in late July – so here is a new month and indeed season. Here’s what I’ll be doing in a professional sense. Haha, professional!
THURSDAY 10TH – H&M STUDIO LAUNCH – REGENT ST STORE, 9AM-1PM
LOVELY new collection, of which us djs playing at the launch have been gifted some us. It’s not a bad life.
AOL SUMMER PARTY – FABRIC
Later that day / night am playing at the above. It’s for the company only, but thought I’d let you know.
FRIDAY 11TH – H&M STUDIO LAUNCH – OXFORD ST STORE, 1-5PM
Continuing the launch at the Oxford St store. Maybe I’ll wear some different clobber from the collection. Or ALL of the pieces.
SATURDAY 12TH – H&M POP UP – BRICK LANE, 2-6PM
H&M AGAIN! This time East side for the last few weeks of its pop ups. They have free coffee, lollies and cocktails for shoppers AS WELL as clothes. That’s good isn’t it? Oh and ME playing some records to soundtrack the afternoon to.
SUNDAY 13TH, 20TH & 27TH – W DOES BRUNCH – W HOTEL, 12-4PM
Lovely lovely brunch, lovely lovely W, sofas, slippers, amazing food and drinks, super staff, tv room, loadsa mirrorballs and me playing records in a fancy frock. INFO / BOOKING AND THAT HERE
NEW! NEW! NEW! Brand new monthly night of themed karaoke cavorting and carousing! Every month the theme will change and thus the track list will cut its cloth accordingly from the ginormous catalogue of Lucky Voice songs. For the first party on September 15th, we’ll be stepping back to the 70s and into our sequins for a night of DISCO. Hosted by ME. MORE INFO AND BOOKING HERE!
New party at the brill Bounce, a ping pong bar. My mate Zoe is amazing at ping pong. Like Monica in Friends. But not as violently competitive. Anyway, this is a new weekly party. It hasn’t got a name yet. But it will have. It’s from the people who brought you Buttoned Down Disco. I’m going to be one of the residents. I am toying with a frock made of ping pong balls. It might distract from the fact I am hopeless at ping pong. But then I’ll be playing records so I probably best concentrate on that really.
My trash culture quiz returns after its summer haitus. Will be testing the brains of the SDH members from the hi brow worlds of music, tv, film and more via the sidebar of shame, Heat and Take a Break mag.
Think that’s it work wise. Other than that I’ll be living la vida loca. Am not quite at Ricky Martin’s level, but it’s good to have something to aim for.
So, it’s been a bit hectic and I haven’t updated the site, but I do quack about my goings on on twitter so you can see what in the hell I do by following me here. If you want. If you don’t then that’s equally fine. why you’re on this site though I don’t know Unless your my mum and don’t have twitter. In that case HI MUM.
Anyhoo, went to Glastonbury for the marathon gigs, they were amazing. It is amazing. I loved it and was the best of times all the time I was there. Played all manner of music and had a Glastonbury “moment” every day with a coming together of hilariously fun people in a collected love of some song or other, congas, anti-rain dances, dance OFFS, tops off, uncontrollable disco dancing and just A HECK OF A TIME. I was fuelled by coffee and chocolate and – no doubt – the druids vibes that were in abundance at the hallowed site. It truly is magical. I think I’ve been infected with hippy love. There are worse things to be infected with though tbh. Since returning everything has been ace, so the druids are clearly still at work. unless I stood too close to them funny cigarettes people had on the go. Whichevs, it was ACE. I hope I get to go back and do it all again some day. SIGH
Since then I’ve been playing a few birthday parties, H&M, the marvellous W Hotel, South Place Hotel, hosted a dj battle (!!) & Indeedy Musical Bingo and recorded a show for Heat Radio. The latter has been super exciting. Radio is one of my dear loves and as Heat loves pop, celebs, gossip, silliness and general FUN it’s pretty much my ideal radio home. (To balance all this love of the sugary side of life I read the articles with all the big words at the back of the paper. Life is light and shade after all). Will let you know when I’m on air. SCREAM!
Will try to keep you up to date. But you know how unable I am to stick to that.
Anyway, here’s some things and dates for you. Hope to see you at some. Tra!
SATURDAY 18TH JULY – I’m doing a wedding! In Dalston! You can only go if you are invited though. Or the Bride or Groom. You should know this.
EVERY SUNDAY – W Does Brunch – W Hotel – The best brunch in swinging London town. We have a feast for body, brains, ears, mouths, eyes and legs as they get to sprawl on sofas in slippers and be served up a right treat. I soundtrack it all between 12-4pm
MONDAY 20TH JULY – Tell it Like it Quiz – The Electric – Taking my lolz-packed, trash can culture quiz over West for some brain-testing (well, kind of…) Monday night fun.
THURSDAY 23RD JULY – Heddon St Kitchen – Gordon Ramsay owns this place. Am djing at a party there. Don’t think el Gordo will be there. But you may be?
FRIDAY 24TH JULY – H&M pop up – Brick Lane – Not sure WHERE this is exactly, but I will do and will be there betwixt 3 – 7pm.
FRIDAY 31ST JULY – RAVE KARAOKE AT KENDAL CALLING – SCREAM! This is going to be ACE. Kicking off their Acid House party on the Friday of it’s 10th year, Rave Karaoke will have you reaching for the lasers and singing your heart out as we pump up the jam. It’s sold out! Me and Snoop! SCREAM AGAIN!
I’ve got two new things happening next week. One for the brain and one for the body, hence the subject of this here post. Look:
Tuesday 11th November – Tell it Like It Quiz!
Yes a quiz! Another one! Except this one’s my very own and will be making its debut at Shoreditch House on Tuesday 11th November to see the members battle each other in a trash pop culture quiz that will see no mensa sorts running away with the crown. That’s because the questions will range from the bottom of the bargain bin to the top of the pops and one doesn’t need to have an exceptional IQ to know these answers. (Mainly cos I haven’t got one and it was me wot wrote it)
Rounds will be from the worlds of music, fashion, silver and small screen, celebrity goings on and other hi brow subjects of a similar ilk. It kicks off at 7pm, maximum six to a team and there are amazing prizes up for grabs (as well as some poundshop treats to add that discount glamma).
So come along and prove your brains in the quest to find the quizzing champions!
Friday 14th November – Dessert Island Disco
I am VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS. Here’s some scrawl I prepared earlier about it so you can get excited too (hopefully):
Beneath the Shoreditch streets on Friday 14th November, lies a destination of dreams for those who prefer the sweeter side of life.
Descending the staircase of Casa Negra into the Playroom, for one night only you will be transported to Dessert Island Disco! It’s where cake and music unite on the dance floor for one heck of a tasty treat of a night out!
This recipe for a riotous night out comes courtesy of DJ Anna Greenwood, Miss Cakehead and London Mess Chef, Jim Thomlinson, who will be providing music, show stopping sweets, a hint of madness and unadulterated pure pleasure for hedonists and hungry amongst us!
A calorie neutral night out awaits as you dance away the sugary sensations on the dance floor to a soundtrack of Friday night disco pop bangers.
Expect apple pie scented shots, candy cotton bubbles, many a disco donut and a wallop of dance floor action, to give you Friday night fun unlike any other.
So pack your bags, strap on them dancing shoes, wear your stretchiest pants and get ready for a super sugar rush on your mini break of mayhem!
I’m not really a “blogger” so no idea why I have a blog. I have no great designs on being one. I’m not one for selfies either. I’m quite rubbish at self-promotion despite being able to talk about myself fairly easily and at great length. So really I’d like to change this page to NEWS, but I don’t have the appropriate skills to do this and my friend who designed the site keeps forgetting to change it. Yes, it’s such hardship.
ANYWAY, been doing some gigs and things, amongst them a couple of weddings, a birthday party, a FRIEZE event at Shoreditch House, W Does Brunch, a big charity do and I cleaned the fridge his morning. It looks great. Sure this is good news for everyone.
Over the next few weeks am quiz mastering (misstressing? That sounds a bit racy) tonight (21st October) at The Old Queen’s Head and tomorrow (22nd October) at the Cat and Mutton.
H&M on 25th October, 1st & 6th November, the latter being for the Alexander Wang launch, which is very exciting and will see the store turned upside down in a frenzied fury of legging warfare. I’ll be in the sanctuary of the dj booth playing records and dancing about and trying to nab some gear myself.
Miss Cakehead, London Mess Chef & I are joining forces for the first ever Dessert Island Disco. Where cake meets pop on the dancefloor, basically a calorie neutral night out full of musical and moorish sensations. A cake pop. A donut disco. Will write something official about this at a later date (SURE) but it’s at thePlayroomat Casa Negra on Friday 14th November. I’m massively looking forward to it. We’ve got some top plans.
Hallowe’en am at the High Priestess Ball at the Camden Centre. I’m not very good at Hallowe’en. Although I do like a horror film, I’m just not good at the whole dressing up bit. Which is strange considering I have a secondary wardrobe of dress up. But they’re all sparkly and bright and not doomy and dealthly as is the Hallowe’en style. Also am partial to mahoganising myself with fake tan which goes against he whole dead look. Unless they have St Tropez in hell. Who knows. Guess some of us will find out.
Other than this I massively love telly at the moment. The Apprentice is still good in its 10th year I don’t care what the HATAS say, Corrie excellent (natch, although am missing Deirdre), Strictly, X Factor… my tastes are culturally rich. On balance I listen to Radio 4, read the paper, go to galleries. So maybe my tastes ARE in fact culturally diverse. Who knew.
